Ecoregions: Cross Timbers

The Cross Timbers is a patchwork of post oak and blackjack oak woodland and open prairie that covers much of North Texas, including areas around Fort Worth, Weatherford, and Granbury. Soils here are often sandy or loamy and can be shallow or rocky, and they typically drain faster than the heavy clay found farther east.

This collection gathers native trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses that suit those conditions. Not sure which ecoregion you're in? Look up your address on an ecoregion map and check your soil. A handful of moist soil that feels gritty or crumbles points toward the Cross Timbers. Sticky, heavy clay points toward the Blackland Prairie.
